How I Use AI to Build Custom Websites

I use AI primarily as a development accelerator, not a design tool or a strategy tool. The AI helps me write code faster, generate content drafts, refactor existing code, and solve specific technical problems. It does not decide what to build, how to structure a site, or what a business needs from its website.

In practical terms, this means I might use AI to generate the initial structure of a Laravel controller, draft responsive CSS for a section I have already designed, or produce a first pass of page copy based on a detailed brief. I then review, refine, and integrate that output into a codebase I understand completely.

The AI produces raw material. The engineering judgment, the architectural decisions, and the quality assurance are mine.

The quality of AI output depends almost entirely on the quality of the input. A vague prompt produces generic code. A precise prompt with clear context produces useful, specific code that needs minimal revision.

This is where engineering experience makes a material difference. When I prompt an AI tool to write a component, I provide the architectural context: what framework, what patterns the project follows, what constraints exist, what the component needs to do, and how it fits into the broader system. The AI does not know these things on its own.

Someone without that context would get technically functional code that does not fit the project. I get code that integrates cleanly because I specified what "clean" means in this particular codebase.

Code generation for well-defined patterns is where AI tools are strongest. If I need a new admin controller that follows the same patterns as three existing controllers, AI can produce a solid first draft in seconds. The pattern is clear, the context is established, and the output is predictable.

Content drafting is another area of genuine value. Given a detailed brief about a page's purpose, target audience, and key messages, AI can produce a structured first draft that captures the right points. I then rewrite for voice, accuracy, and nuance, but starting from a structured draft is faster than starting from blank.

Refactoring and code review also benefit. AI can identify patterns, suggest improvements, and catch inconsistencies across a codebase faster than manual review. It does not replace careful human review, but it surfaces things I might miss on a first pass.

Strategy and architecture are not AI strengths. An AI tool cannot tell you whether your business needs five pages or fifty, whether your site architecture supports your sales process, or whether your content hierarchy matches how customers actually research your service. Those require business understanding and experience.

Design judgment is another limitation. AI can generate layouts, but it cannot tell you whether the visual hierarchy communicates the right message, whether the spacing creates the right reading experience, or whether the design reflects the brand positioning you need. Design is a judgment call, not a pattern completion.

Quality assurance is the most important limitation. AI generates plausible code, but plausible is not the same as correct. Every line of AI-generated code needs to be reviewed by someone who understands the project, the framework, and the business requirements. The developer who uses AI without review is not faster. They are less reliable.

There is an important distinction between a website that was built with AI assistance and a website that was generated by AI. AI-generated websites, the kind produced by website builder tools, follow generic patterns. They produce sites that look like sites but were never designed for a specific business, audience, or commercial objective.

AI-assisted development, the way I work, uses AI tools within a structured process. The strategy, architecture, and quality standards come from human expertise. The AI accelerates the execution of decisions that have already been made thoughtfully.

The result is a site that benefits from AI speed but maintains the specificity and quality of custom development. That distinction matters for any business that needs its website to perform, not just exist.

AI tools allow me to deliver more value within the same project scope. A Business package that might have taken six weeks without AI assistance can be delivered in four to five weeks with the same quality. The time saved goes into refinement, testing, and optimisation rather than cutting corners.

It also means I can offer more thorough work at each price point. Content is more detailed. Internal linking is more comprehensive. Testing is more rigorous. The AI handles repetitive execution so I can spend more time on the decisions that actually determine whether the site works.

What it does not mean is that the work requires less expertise. If anything, AI tools reward experience more. The developer who knows exactly what to ask for gets better results than the developer who is learning as they go. Engineering discipline plus AI capability is a combination that produces better websites, not a shortcut that replaces either.
